In this election, the Republicans nominated William McKinley who was in favor of high tariffs and also stressed adherence to the gold standard. The Democrats nominated William Jennings Bryan who proclaimed, “You shall not crucify mankind on a cross of gold.” This speech earned him the place as the Democratic nominee. The Populists selected Thomas Watson, while the Gold Democrats nominated John Palmer. At the end of the election, it was the Republicans who won with their candidate William McKinley.
