jan 1, 795 - Leo III is Elected Pope
Description:
This election shows the responsibility held by the Church at this point in history. Due to the number of enemies that Rome had at this point, the pressure was put on the Church, which had the most influence in the Empire.
Leo III was an unpopular Pope, to the point where a group of conspirators had him imprisoned in a monastery, claiming he committed adultery. He later escaped the Monastery, and was welcomed back into Rome by King Charlemagne.
