oct 20, 1972 - VHS

Description:

On this date 'The young teacher' was the first ever VHS released.

When Sony released their Betamax machine to the market, they tried to make it the industry standard for home video. Companies like JVC were not happy with Sony trying to force their machine on them and JVC came out with their own system which came to be known as VHS. VHS had better quality, could record more, was more light weight and also signed deals with big motion picture companies so films could be released using their format.

By the mid 1990s the VHS market revenue was so huge it over took revenue from cinemas.

VHS was the first time big theatrical releases could be viewed at home, it made people more attached and excited to take their favourite movies home. This also applied to TV, people could now record and save live TV and their favourite shows. VHS changed the way people viewed and consumed film and TV, it also was extremely beneficial for motion picture companies, as they could produce easier to make, cheaper VHS releases for a very high profit. VHS was a win-win product that brung the cinematic world into homes.
