jan 9, 1901 - Green screen

Description:

In 1901 'The man with the rubber head,' made by George Méliès, was released. Méliès was a master at special effects and created the sense of illusion and wonder in films. In this film he used the technique of super imposing and double exposure, to create the illusion of a floating head. This was the beginning of the green screen.

The Green screen we know today was invented by Chroma key technology in the 1930s. Larry Butler was the fist to use it with the 'blue screen traveling matte' technique in the 1940s 'The thief of Baghdad'

Soon blue screen was switched to green as digital cameras were more sensitive to green than blue.

In 1988 green screen animation and live action was used to create 'Who framed Rodger Rabbit' this was the first time real life actors could interact with cartoon/computer characters.

Green screen was a huge step in technological advancement in the film industry, it allowed a cross over between imagination and real life. Similar to the effects of CGI on the industry, it helped expand the possibilities and creativity of film. It also was way cheaper, locations and buildings could be created and put onto the green screen rather than having to film out on location, as well as action sequences.
