Many film makers moved from New York on the east coast to South California on the west coast. To escape Edison's cartel who would break director's equipment if it wasn't made by Edison.
This was important to film making as without all these directors moving to South California we wouldn't have the film studios we have today that were founded in California such as the Walt Disney Company
