jun 20, 1975 - First summer block buster

Description:

In 1970 Hollywood a studio chief overheard a conversation where someone went 'we've got all these block busters coming out, well some are block busters.' Something clicked in the studio chief and he misheard him say 'summer block buster' and that is when it started.

June, July and August were movies lowest points, nothing big was ever released as production companies just assumed everyone was too busy being outside and enjoying the summer weather/activities to want to be stuck in a cinema. But this all changed with the release of 'Jaws' on this date. It was the first time a big block buster was being released in the summer and it basically invented the culture of watching big blockbusters.

It was a huge, huge success, making over $7 million on it's first weekend. It was a perfect time for a film like this to be released, while everyone was enjoying the beach and the sun. Production companies realized the timing of the success and that formed the 'movie calendar timeline' where depending on the month/time of year, certain films would be released.

Jaws helped build the world of blockbuster cinema and how films can be enjoyed and consumed on a mass scale at the perfect time. It helps boost sales and general enjoyment, as people feel the movie is more relevant to the time of year they watch it.

Even today, summer time is the most popular time to go to the cinema and watch films, many other high grossing films have been released in the summer such as 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' and various star wars movies.
