may 14, 1804 - Lewis & Clark
Description:
President Thomas Jefferson gave Meriwether Lewis instructions to explore the lands west of the Mississippi River. Lewis chose William Clark as his co-leader for the mission. The excursion lasted over two years. Along the way they faced many problems such as harsh weather, unforgiving terrain, treacherous waters, injuries, starvation, disease and both friendly and hostile Native Americans. All in all, the approximately 8,000-mile journey was pretty much a huge success and provided new geographic, ecological and social information about previously undiscovered areas of North America.
