On this date, the World Wide Web was available to the public. It was invented by Tim Berners-Lee.
The internet is extremely significant to every single industry and area of the world and its development into what it is today. It's contribution to all forms of art, is one of the biggest ways the internet changed the world.
The internet made it possible to share anything instantly with anyone, anywhere. To any type of artist; writer, photographer, filmmaker, etc. There was now a way to share what you wanted without the holdback of getting it approved by hosting platforms, such as a newspaper, billboards or various other ways that had to be approved to get your work out into the world. The internet is free and accessible, giving up a platform for developing artists and filmmakers to individually host and brand themselves to the world.
One of the biggest things the internet bought to young filmmakers was platforms such as Youtube, which was released early 2005. People could create what they wanted and have it available for free to the world in seconds and make money off of revenue. This encouraged new filmmakers and gave them hope in the industry and their art. Other platforms such as Vimeo and streaming sites like Netflix, also are platforms which independent filmmakers can thrive off of. Many filmmakers, film review channels and animators have found their success through the power of places like Vimeo and Youtube.
Platforms, especially youtube, could be viewed as a mini film industry in its own right. Successful YouTubers rack in hundreds of million views on their channels, with thousands, and millions of subscribers worldwide- all with armies of fans and sums of money.
The internet opened up a universe of opportunities and platforms where independent filmmakers can fully take the stage and reach out to whole new audience and approach to the art form, that the film industry and TV industry are struggling to keep up with.
