jan 1, 259 BC - Zenon's Palestinian Journey
Description:
From January 259 - February 258 BCE, Zenon travels through Syria/Palestine on behalf of the Ptolemaic dioiketes. His journey took him from Caesarea to Jerusalem to Jericho to Transjordan stronghold of the Tobiads at Iraq al-Amir; then travels north to sources of Jordan and back to the coast via Galilee to Akko/Ptolemais. The main purpose of his joruney was probably inspection of economic relations between Egyptian motherland and its province. See further the Zenon papyri, of which about 40 (out of c. 2000) documents deal with Syria/Palestine. [Schäfer 2003:17]
