Ernest Rutherford became the first to discover that atoms have a small nucleus that is charged and is surrounded by an empty space. This soon became known as Rutherford/planetary model. This was a major contribution to the Atomic theory because it set course for people like Niels Bohr, Schrodinger, and James Chadwick.
