Founded in 1828 by Solomon SouthWick, Thurlow Weed, William Wirt, and John Quincy Adams. It started off strongly opposing Freemasonry, but later wanted to take part in bigger political issues. The Party was founded on the aftermath of the disappearance of William Morgan. It was a movement based on public indignation and suspicion of the secret fraternal order known as the Masons
