mar 25, 313 - Arch of Constantine

Description:

Rome, 313-315

Built to commemorate Constantine's victory over Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge. Uses spoila from the 2nd century when the empire was under one central emperor rather than from the time of the tetrarchy in the 3rd century. Constantine is shown in the posture of ad locutio. Oddly, the arch displays to references to Christ or Christianity despite the traditional accounts of Constantine's victory being the result of his emblazoning the Chi Rho on the shields of his troops

relevant terms: spoila and ad locutio
