jan 1, 440 BC - Democritus proposes the idea of the atom
Description:
In 440 BC, Greek philosopher Democritus proposes the idea of the atom, or rather, "Atomos". He believed that everything in the world was made up of tiny particles which varied in size and shape. These particles would also, according to his theory, be surrounded by empty space.
Despite being the Pilgrim of the atom, his theory was rejected by society, in which many scientists believed Aristotle's theory: That matter was made of 4 elements; Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire.
