Founded in 1792 by Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison to oppose the centralized policies of the Federalist Party formed by Alexander Hamilton. They believed that the constitution was too strict and it clearly limited the powers of the Federal government. This party unlike the Federalist Party did not have the right to adopt additional powers to fulfill duties under the Constitution.
