sep 17, 1862 - Battle of Antietam

Description:

Union troops led by general McClellan stopped Lee’s Confederate troops from invading the north at the Antietam creek in Maryland. Bloody attacks from both sides continued during the during the day but neither of the troops could force a breakthrough. Late in the day Ambrose’s troops pushed across a stone bridge over the Antietam Creek and managed to flank the Confederate troops. Lee’s troops suffered heavy casualties however McClellan refused to chase the Confederates down and finish the remaining troops. Lincoln was not happy with this, but he used the victory to promote the Emancipation Proclamation.
