8h 29min, jul 9, 1943 y - Invasion of Sicily
Description:
The Invasion of Sicily was an Allied attack which was codenamed Operation Husky. This invasion was an ambitious, airborne operation, which involved taking the island Sicily from the Axis Powers (Italy and Nazi Germany). The attack started on the 9th of July and ended on the 17th of August in 1943. The Invasion of Sicily was very important as the Allies drove out Axis land, air and naval forces from Sicily and the Mediterranean sea lanes were finally opened for the Allied merchant ships for the first time since 1941. The Italian leader, Benito Mussolini, was crippled in strength and the Allies were able to invade Italy. The German leader, Adolf Hitler, had to cancel a major attack at Kursk after only a week, to help the Italian forces. This resulted to the Germans being weaker on the Eastern Front.
