Textile mills really helped S; Cheap labor = main attraction for investors → became v imp to keep labor cheap for S industrialists; Mostly in Piedmont region of S appalachia; Rural S wanted employment in textile mills; Didn’t include AA, paid ½ of N counterparts, compensated in form of credit at company store; Was first steady jobs and wages for S; Mills capitalize on cheap labor of women & children → mills offer poor farm families chance to be together
