mar 28, 2000 - The first DVD came out

Description:

The first DVD that came out was a film called 'Twister' on this date, for around £22.

The DVD is a digital storage format that was developed by Philips and Sony in 1995. Prior to the DVD, VHS was the format used before to watch movies, but due to the DVDs way better quality and sound, longer lifespan, interactivity and significantly more storage space, the pros of the new product quickly overtook the VHS market, pushing movie companies to release all their new films on DVD, increasing the sales. Models to watch DVDs on started to improve as more light and potential was shone onto DVD and it's portential.

In 2006, Blue-ray was released, which had an even higher definition, it took a while to take off as prices were very high at the beginning.

The new change in format, made every part of the industry, not just film, have to change the way they produced and worked with making media. The new interactivity of the DVDs made films more enjoyable and somewhat personal, people felt more included and involved with the art form, as often special features would include behind the scenes and interviews.

DVDs also allowed movie companies to make more films, there was less risk of loosing a lot of money as prodution on DVD was way cheaper than VHS.

Any new technological advancement that affects the film industry always opens up new opportunities.
