jan 22, 1539 - Marital freedoms increase
Description:
Marriage, sexuality, & role of women
-Marriage = remedy for unavoidable sin of lust
-Luther & Zwingli supported marriage > celibacy
-Both of their wives had lots of children and had to create new and respectable role of ‘pastor’s wife’ to avoid becoming new version of ‘priest’s concubine (side hoe)’
[it worked-Luther + wife Katharina von Bora’s portraits were hung in wealthy homes as image of perfect marriage]
-Role of women = spiritually equal to men, socially subordinate
-Divorce + marriage allowed [UNLIKE catholics]; toxic marriage endangers both souls; but even though legally allowed, still a v rare last resort
-Prostitution: very illegal- shut down brothels, condemned all amarital sex (premarital, adultery, prostitution) as whoredom, a name also used for theological opponents
-NEG: only real option for women was marriage or convents, and none could be in clergy in 1500s
