jun 6, 1932 - James Chadwick (1932 AD)

Description:

Sir James Chadwick (AD 1891-1974) was a British physicist. He worked under Ernest Rutherford when he was working on his master's degree. He was with Rutherford when he conducted his famous experiment with alpha particles and a sheet of gold. Chadwick continued to perform experiments with alpha particles. In one such experiment, he fired alpha particles at beryllium. He noticed that a strange radiation of an unknown identity was released that ejected protons from the nuclei of several other substances. Chadwick was able to determine that the radiation consisted of particles that had the same mass of a proton, but they had no electrical charge-thus he gave them the name neutrons. These "neutrons" were also a part of the nucleus of an atom, as they could penetrate the nucleus without being deflected due to not having a charge.
His later work included leading the British delegation of the Manhattan Project.
