It’s where the colonists formally severed their ties to Britain and declared themselves an independent country. This resulted in the birth of the United States of America, formally severing ties with the British and declaring them as their own, independent country. To the war, the declaration represented, in a way, what the colonists were fighting for. It wasn’t their declaration of war, per say, but it was definitely a declaration of an idea they would have to fight to obtain.
