may 1, 1775 - Second Continental Congress
Description:
At Philadelphia
This was the colonial government meant to bring the colonies together in a fight. They authorized the creation of a continental army. They offered a peaceful solution to the British in the form of the Olive Branch Petition. When this offer was met with a declaration that the colonies were in rebellion and the subsequent mobilization of British troops, they formally severed ties with Britain by adopting the Declaration of Independence.
The end result of the Congress was the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the creation of a continental army.
This event officially started the war for independence with the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. It also organized an army to fight the British and technically sparked the actual war with the Olive Branch Petition being what made King George III make the final decision to declare them as rebels and send troops over.
