jul 4, 1776 - Declaration of Independence
Description:
The Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4, 1776, by the the Continental Congress. It consisted of two parts: the theory that governments were made to protect the rights of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” and then a list of grievances against the king. Most colonists rejoiced at the news of the Declaration, but some disapproved and were still loyal to the king. This marked the formal beginning of the colonies becoming “states” and creating their own governments independent from England.
