jan 1, 1767 - Townshend Acts

Description:

The Townshend acts (1767-1768) were a series of laws passed by Charles Townshend. Some of the effects of the act include taxing glass, tea, paint, paper, and other resources imported into the colonies, setting up courts against smugglers (without local jury), created customs board which would collect taxes, and tried to shut down the New York assembly. These acts were made in an attempt not to anger the colonists, but it didn't help at all as they still complained about the taxes, and the shutting down of the New York Assembly only caused it to become a martyr.
