mar 22, 1765 - Stamp Act
March 22nd 1765
Description:
The Stamp act which was passed on the 22nd of March put tax on all of the printed papers produced. It put taxes on publications, licenses, legal documents, newspapers, and many more printed products. The reason the British did this was to get the colonists to pay off the large debt from the war and also to make them pay for their army themselves.
Though it sounded noble, the colonists did not like it and reacted by making petitions, boycotts, and acting in violence. This was because the colonists believed that they were being taxes without representation. It also costed more money and was unfair to the liberties' origins. Many groups that were hit by the tax formed groups and rebelled that summer.
