may 10, 1773 - TEA ACT May 10, 1773

Description:

The Tea Act was enforced by the British in order to save the British East India Company, which was going bankrupt. This act gave the company the right to export merchandise (tea) without paying the navigation taxes the British also enforced. This angered many colonists and merchants. Colonial influential merchants feared being replaced and bankrupted by a powerful monopoly. The colonists boycotted tea (including women who played major roles during this event) and threw tea crates into the Boston Harbor as a sign of protest (Boston Tea Party: December 16, 1773).
