jun 11, 1258 - Creation of Parliament

Description:

The Oxford Parliament, also known as the Mad Parliament and the First English Parliament was assembled when King Henry lll of England was in power. It was established by Simon de Montfort. At the signing of the Oxford Parliament on June 11, King Henry accepted a new form of government where power was placed in the hands of a privy council or a council of fifteen members who were to supervise ministerial appointments, local administration and the custody of royal castles. Parliament, meanwhile, which was to meet three times a year, would monitor the performance of this council. Henry agreed to these terms, and as a result, a parliament consisting of fifteen was formed.

This parliament led to separate houses. Using this idea, the founders of the US created the House of Representatives and the Senate which perform relatively the same functions as the Oxford Parliament and other English parliaments.
