jul 1, 1997 - Hong Kong handover

Description:

July 1st 1997, midnight, marked the handover of Hong Kong from British colonial rule to China. The territory became a Special Administrative Region, controlled by the Chinese government, but maintaining the free economy it had developed during its colonisation for at least 50 more years. On the topic of Hong Kong’s ‘one country, two systems’ situation, there often arises two opinions: those who support the Beijing government’s policies and those who call for independence or more autonomy for Hong Kong. While Hong Kong has its own legal system, citizens are only able to vote for the Chief Executive from a list of Beijing-approved candidates. This doesn’t provide absolute democracy, leading to dissatisfaction and outrage among many members of Hong Kong society. What will happen in 2047 is still a subject of impassioned debate.
