jul 13, 2001 - Beijing wins bid for 2008 Olympics

Description:

On July 13th, 2001, Beijing was announced to be the host city for the 2008 Olympics, a first for the country. The victory not only awarded the honour and task of hosting the international sporting event to China, it helped to further establish the country as a formidable economic, social and political power, as well as raised public morale. After the country received criticism and reprimands for its poor management of human rights, its citizens were relieved and proud, celebrating this win with fireworks, flags and festivities. Human rights activists and athletic organisations had mixed reactions, and kept a close eye on China’s preparations and running of the event in 2008.
