After Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States, Mississippi seceeded, and Davis left the Senate. He hoped to become head of the Army of the Confederate States. But shortly after his return to Mississippi, Davis was named provisional president of the Confederacy. He took the oath of office on Feb. 18, 1861. Jefferson Davis was inaugurated as president of the Confederacy on Feb. 22, 1862.Added to timeline:
