Description:

Robert Gagne had a significant impact in the evolution of the field of Instructional Technology. He was Psychologist whose research and influence began to take off during and after World War II, a time period notable in the IT history for the increased usage of audiovisual technology for military training as well as for the emergence of the role Instructional Design in designing instruction. Gagne was a key contributor in this emergence as a result of his philosophies for successful learning. He is best known for describing the “five domains, or types, of learning outcomes – verbal information, intellectual skills, psychomotor skills, attitudes, and cognitive strategies,” (Reiser: "Part II," 2001, pg. 60). He is also known for detailing the Nine Events of Instruction, which Gagne determined to be necessary for learning to successfully occur. Finally, he is also known for his Hierarchical Learning which furthered the thinking that without accounting for and acquiring subordinate skills it would be difficult to acquire superordinate skills.
