Description:

In 1836, the King of Sardinia visited the island of Tavolara and during the visit recognized Giuseppe Bertoleoni as an independent monarch. This marks the creation of the Kingdom of Tavolara.

IN 1848 the Kingdom was established as a protectorate of Sardinia during the Sardinian-Parma War. However, unlike Monaco, Tavolara did not wish to unite with Sardinia. In part due to it's small size and unimportance, Tavolara was allowed to continue its protectorate status.
