jan 13, 1764 - Sugar Act
Description:
This act replaced the ignored Molasses act of 1733, replacing the rate of 6 pence to 3 pence per gallon. It had little support from America, and John Hancock, who was making a living from smuggling French molasses. Merchants claimed that the Sugar act would ruin the distilling industry. They privately vowed to evade the duty by smuggling or by bribing officials.
