Lois Weber was one of the earliest film directors and was one of the most important, She experimented with sound, editing and camera tricks like no one had thought of doing before. She did this in a time where women where thought of as ‘lower’ than men, 1908. Weber was hired by American Gaumont Chronophoines in 1908 which produced phonoscénes. In 1915 weber started directing English language phonoscénes at the Gaumont Studio in Flushing, New York. Her 1913 film, Suspense, popularized split-screen effects. Weber impacted film industry by showing her concerns for humanity and social justice in estimated 200-400 films. She impacted the film world by popularizing the split screen effect for suspense. She has received the ‘Hollywood walk of fame – motion picture’ award on 6518 Hollywood Blvd.
