jan 1, 1908 - Edison's Cartel

Description:

Charges film companies exorbitant prices per foot of film. Non-Edison productions had their equipment smashed.

Even the inventor of the Kinetoscope, William Dixon, paid Edison for the use of the technologies.

This caused directors to move to South California. Land is cheap, and there are large spaces to film in.

This is significant because this is the birth of Hollywood; away from the expense of licensing Edison's technology. A bunch of likeminded people created an area of technological growth in the film industry.
