Shelby is home alone when she goes outside at night to use the hot tub. As she was relaxing in the water, someone held her head under, almost drowning her. While under the water, she was able to see the face of a woman, who later is revealed to be Agnes the Butcher. Agnes was part of the Roanoke Colony that disappeared without a trace.
Matt had gone on away on a business trip to Raleigh, which was 2 hours away but made it home in 1 hour; Shelby had called the cops. An officer responded, asking Matt upon his arrival if she drinks. Not only did the officer not believe a word Shelby said, but he basically refused to help them other than "talking to the 'Polks'," who "mostly keep to themselves and....are not so easy to find." The officer tells Matt to "get a gun".
Shelby no longer wants to live at the house.
That night, Matt hears more hog noises outside and once again goes to investigate. He finds a young pig on the porch, completely skinned. He buried the pig without telling Shelby.
