nov 1, 1478 - The Start of the Spanish Inquisition

Description:

The Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition, more commonly referred to as the Spanish Inquisition, was established by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella with the purpose of purging all non-Christians from Spain. The Inquisition required all Jews and Muslims to convert to Christianity (referred to as "conversos") and killed them if they refused. Sometimes the conversos were killed even if they complied if they were discovered to be secretly practicing their own religion or deemed not Christian enough by the Inquisitors. In 1492, all remaining Jews and Muslims were forced to leave Spain or risk being executed.
