sep 21, 1937 - The Hobbit
Description:
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien was published in 1937. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit, partly basing it off of his experiences during WWI. The battle at the end of the story is a representation of the nations battling against each other. The elves, dwarves, and men fought one common enemy, the orcs. Most of the nations fought against their adversary, which was Germany. Tolkien was influenced by tradition and mythology, and so he used these things in his story. The Hobbit was hugely popular when it was published, and started the series of Lord of the Rings. Other life experiences during his childhood and adulthood Tolkien had were also used as inspiration for his main character Bilbo Baggins and where Tolkien lived served as the set-up for the Shire, and academia and the concepts of other beliefs further guided his writing. Fantasy was the pinnacle for Tolkien's writing, and the concept of war, considering that there is a war at the end of The Hobbit and several battles in Lord of the Rings.
