Tariff = main issue, spread ~10 mill pamphlets on issue; Tariff issue spurred Repub to action; In post-Pendleton politics w/ alliances w/ big businesses, spent $$ to line up “voting cattle” known as “repeaters” and “floaters”; Were paid $20 per vote in Indiana - swing state
Harrison beat Cleveland 233-168 electoral, change of 7k ballots in NY would’ve changed election; Cleveland won popular vote, was first sitting president to be voted out of seat since Van Buren in 1840
