Republicans nominate Blaine; Blaine’s enemies publicized “Mulligan letters” - by Blain to Boston businessman, linking him to corrupt deal w/ fed favors to S railroad, supposed to be burnt; civil service reformers → Dems, known as Mugwumps
Dems nominate reformer Grover Cleveland;
Candidates for presidency had little differences btwn them
Blaine made mistake @ end of campaign - Repub clergyman damned Dems in speech→ NY state turned to Dems bcuz of Irish votes
Cleveland won S & Electoral college 219-182, only won by few thousand pop votes
