Description:

The Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed each territory to decide the issue of slavery on the basis of popular sovereignty. Conflicts arose between pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers which led to the period of violence (Bleeding Kansas,) and helped paved the way for the Civil War.
