jul 2, 1928 - The Equal Franchise Act – July 2nd, 1928

Description:

In 1918 a law was created which allowed women, over the age of 30, to vote (only if they were married to a member of Local Government Register or a member themselves). Even though women got the right to vote, it was not equal yet, since men could already vote at the age of 21 (if they served the army even at the age of 19). At that time, about 8,5 million women were allowed to vote because they met the condition.

On July 2nd, 1928 the Equal Franchise Act became law, which enabled women over the age of 21 to vote. The idea was already introduced in March, and after three months, it finally became an official law. Consequently, the number of women who could vote increased to about 15 million. Additionally, the property qualifications for the right to vote were reduced to the same as men, which made them equal in this regard. This decision is considered as a national movement in the Victorian era and is also known as the Representation of the People Act 1928.
