The Louisiana purchase is pretty much how in 1803 530,000,000 acres of territory in North America was purchased by the United States from France for $15 million. Since 1762 Spain owned the territory of Louisiana (was 828,000 square miles). With the Pinckney treaty in place Spanish empire had control over Louisiana. American state-men felt comfortable that the United States westward expansion wouldn't be restricted in the future.Added to timeline:
