dec 18, 1856 - J. J. Thomson

Description:

Joseph John Thomson was born in 1856 on the 18th of December in England and was the first to discover a particle smaller than the atom and improved the atomic model. After his education at Owen's College, he began to study a ray known as a Cathode Ray, which is now known to be a beam of electrons emitted from the cathode of a tube in a high vacuum. However at this time electrons were yet to be discovered. He studied these rays and by conducting a series of experiments, concluded that there were particles smaller than atoms, which he named 'corpuscles', which is now known as the electron.
