may 7, 1867 - Treaty of Veracruz

Description:

During the War between the States, France invaded Mexico and established the Second Mexican Empire following the second Franco-Mexican war.

The Resistance to the new regime lasted until 1867, when the resistance leader was caught and executed in Nayarit. Following the execution of the US-backed resistance, the US considered fully invading the French holdings in Mexico to end the empire.

However, cooler head prevailed and after negotiations, the Treaty of Veracruz was signed in May 1867; in it, the United States agreed to recognize the Second Mexican Empire as a French Puppet, in exchange, France would recede all support for the CSA. Additionally, the port city of Veracruz, where the treaty was signed, was to be leashed to the United States for 99 years.
