Invented by Johannes Gutenberg around 1440, the printing press featured a moveable type that could copy texts much more quickly than being hand-written. This allowed for the quick spread of ideas across long distances. Literacy rates increased and books brought people together to discuss ideas and join causes. Printing contributed to the success of Renaissance ideas and the Reformation.
