As Korea started developing and reached a financially balanced status the summer olympics were held in Seoul, Korea. It happened in 1988, the 1988 olympics were officially known as the Games of XXIV olympiad. It was a multi- sports event held in Korea. It was the second time for an olympic to be held in an Asian country ( the first one was held in Tokyo, Japan in 1964 ). In the olympics 159 nations participated and was represented by 8,391 athletes ( 6,197 men and 2,194 women ). In South Korea around 401 athletes (269 men and 132 women) represented South Korea and participated in 217 events in 27 sports. South Korea, in general did well in the olympics they had 12 gold medals, 10 silver medals and 11 bronze medals.
The invitation for the olympics were sent to every country but some countries couldn’t participate. Examples of some countries that didn’t participate is North Korea, Cuba, Ethiopia and etc. Their main reason for not joining the olympics were because of their financial problems. This event showed other countries that South Korea was rapidly developing.
