aug 25, 1945 - Japan Surrenders / Declaration of Independence

Description:

Declaration of Independence ( 1945 August 15 )

For around 40 years Korea had been Japan’s colony. It was one of the hardest time in Korean history. But in 1945 when the Japan lost in the world war II everything changed. During the World War II Japan looked like they were winning but ended up as their surrender. Throughout a long period of war they eventually surrendered. In 1945 August 15, Japan surrendered and Korea was set free. As Japan surrendered, Korea came to the independence day. Although Korea didn’t do much to accomplish independence but luckily they did. After the independence Lee Syngman became South Korea’s first president and Kim il sung became the first North Korea’s leader. The day of independence was called the “Gwangbokjeol” and known as “Chogukhaebangŭi nal” for North Korea. This day officially became a public holiday in October 1st. The independence day ( a.k.a Gwangbokjeol) is also known as the national liberation day. This holiday is still a public holiday for both North and South Korea. An interesting fact is that this holiday, national liberation day, is the only holiday that both celebrated by North and South Korea. It is still a memorable day for all Koreans.
