jan 1, 1674 - Anton Van Leeuwenhoek

Description:

Anton Van Leeuwenhoek was able to expand upon Janssen's ideas of microscopes. He created a single lens microscope, rather than a compound microscope. With this microscope he was able to see motile objects. He described many types of microorganisms that he called "animalcules". Leeuwenhoek saw sperm cells and realized that fertilization requires the sperm cell entering the egg cell. Through this he discovered that generation occurs differently than Hooke's idea of spontaneous generation.
