Mexico encouraged Americans to help populate the country. Thousands of people answered the call. In return for land, they pledged to follow the laws of Mexico. As the Anglo population grew, several issues started to appear, including slavery and religion. Texas colonists wanted greater self-government, but Mexico refused and a leading started a revolt.
